Our History

Superkidz Community Trust was founded in 2001 by Helen Russell, a resident of the Ferrier Estate in the south of Greenwich that was notorious for gang violence, drugs, antisocial behaviour and lack of aspiration. The Evening Standard described it as “one of London’s most notorious ‘hell hole’ estates.” Many young people are second or third generation unemployed. Helen worked tirelessly to enthuse defeated and often frightened adults and finally built a team to volunteer to help develop the project. It started at a grass roots level, with its first act being to survey other residents and young people as to needs and possible provision. It became a registered charity and limited company in 2008, and now works in deprived communities across several estates.
